The enjoyment of hot springs isn’t just about soaking in the water. When visiting a hot spring area, encounters with nature, people, and the local culture provide pleasant stimuli for both the mind and body. Gazing at the ocean or the sky, listening to the murmuring of a river…. Stepping away from daily life and immersing oneself in nature can liberate both the mind and body. This change in environment stimulates and helps to balance the mind and body, known as the “Health resort therapy effect.” Hot spring areas are often blessed with natural surroundings, making them ideal for harnessing this effect for health and well-being.
When humans experience tension or anxiety, beta waves appear in their brainwaves. Prolonged exposure to this state can have negative effects on health. On the contrary, alpha waves are present when doing activities one enjoys or while in a relaxed state. Some data show that alpha waves increase after bathing in a hot spring. Furthermore, soaking in an outdoor bath increases the proportion of alpha waves. Bathing while gazing at nature outdoors provides a precious moment of relaxation and peace.
